How long is a counselling session and how many sessions do I need?

  • 50-minute sessions
  • The number of sessions is usually contextually dependent as various aspects would need to be considered.
  • Book each session as you go along.

Once you’ve started counselling you may find that you only need a few sessions that have helped support you in making the desired changes to your life. If it is that you need more long-term work this will be reviewed with you regularly.

How frequent should my sessions be?

  • Weekly counselling is recommended.
  • However, some come more often, and others attend less frequently.
  • Once again this is all contextually dependent and can be discussed with you in greater detail so feel free to book in for a free consultation.

What can I expect during my first counselling session?

Nearly everyone feels, anxious, nervous, worried, or even confused when having their first counselling session. This is okay. My job is to support you in feeling comfortable and safe within the session.

I will ask what brought you to therapy and if you have any questions for me. I will listen and ask questions to explore your situation further. I may offer different perspectives utilising psychological information as I believe this can help support us to better understand ourselves.

It also encourages us to find a sense of direction once we build an understanding thereby supporting us to navigate towards positive change. This is your time. Your sessions. Your narrative.

Confidentiality and safeguarding?

  • Everything that you share during therapy is confidential to the allegory practice.
  • The only exception would be if there was going to be serious harm to someone else or themselves or if there were going to be any child safeguarding concerns.
  • Computerised notes are usually made at the end of the session which again is confidential to the allegory practice.
  • There are statutory requirements which must be met, and these are outlined in the paperwork which will be sent to you before we begin our work together.

If you are okay with all this then feel free to get in touch and book yourself in for a free consultation.

How can I find out more about counselling?

  • Have a look at the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) website.
  • We recommend a book: “Therapy is magic” by Jo Love, to help support you in understanding all the options that are available to you within the UK. It also helps build an understanding on what therapy entails.

How do I know my counsellor is legitimate?
